What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, is a procedure that removes excess skin, fat, and muscle from the upper and/or lower eyelids. Our qualified Ophthalmologist and cosmetic surgeon for over 20 years, Dr Paul Effiong, carries out this specialist lift at our Liverpool aesthetics clinic. We can help you:

  • Reduce puffiness and bags under the eyes
  • Eliminate drooping or hooded eyelids
  • Improve vision if your eyelids are obstructing your sight
  • Create a more alert and youthful appearance

Eyelid rejuvenation services – our approach

Dr. Paul Effiong performs the advanced blepharoplasty treatment at our clinic located on Bold Street. He will carefully assess your individual needs and expectations to develop a personalised treatment plan, addressing any aesthetic concerns you may have.

The procedure and what to expect

Our blepharoplasty is performed under local anaesthesia, and the surgery usually takes between 45 minutes and two hours, depending on the extent of the procedure. You will be able to go home the same day and the downtime spans between 5-10 days, depending on your speed of recovery.

Upper eyelid surgery

Dr. Paul will begin by making a carefully placed incision along the natural crease of the eyelid. This strategic placement ensures that any resulting scar will be well hidden within the eyelid’s natural contours. Through this incision, excess skin, fat, and muscle that contribute to drooping or hooding are skilfully removed. The incision is delicately closed, leaving a virtually imperceptible scar.

Lower eyelid surgery

The incision is made either just below the lower eyelashes or on the inside of the eyelid. This allows for access to the underlying fatty deposits responsible for under-eye bags. These fat pads may be repositioned or partially removed to achieve a smoother, more youthful appearance. In some cases, a small amount of excess skin may also be removed. As with upper eyelid surgery, the incision is intricately closed, minimising visible scarring.

Combination procedures

When both upper and lower blepharoplasty are performed, Dr. Paul will carefully coordinate the two procedures to ensure harmonious and balanced results. The goal is to create a refreshed and revitalised appearance that complements your eyes and overall facial features.

Post-surgical advice

To help with your recovery, you’ll need to follow these guidelines:

  • Prop your head up with pillows for a couple of days to reduce swelling.
  • Apply a cold pack to your eyelid to help reduce swelling
  • Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun and wind
  • Take paracetamol or any painkillers prescribed by your surgeon to relieve pain
  • Gently clean your eyelids using prescribed ointment or eyedrops

For a few days post-surgery, you should also avoid:

  • Wearing contact lenses or rubbing your eyes
  • Any form of strenuous activity
  • Swimming
  • Smoking; smoke can irritate your eyes

Potential side effects

Mild side effects may occur, including:

  • Irritated, sensitive, or watery eyes
  • Puffy, numb eyelids that are difficult to close
  • Bruising
  • Scars

These side effects are usually temporary and will fade over time.
