As the light at the end of the tunnel seems to be just in sight, meaning less restrictions and hopefully resuming some much overdue normality. You may have noticed, last year the government plans to help in the fight against obesity.

Living with excess weight puts people at a higher risk of serious illness or complications, if contracting COVID-19. According to governments statistics, 8% of critically ill patients with COVID-19 in intensive care units have been morbidly obese compared with just 2.9% of the general population (link here). This information shows us that there could potentially be a problem for many and the NHS as restrictions ease.

Research in the UK taken place in 166 hospitals with over 16,749 participants, has suggested that people who are obese are 33% more likely to die with COVID-19 (link here).

Why could this be?

The reasons behind this are still being explored. In the early stages of the pandemic, experts quickly linked the following health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and coronary heart disease amongst many others, to higher rates of mortality for positive COVID-19 patients. As we already know, these health conditions are greatly linked to obesity.

In light of this information, the government have been focussing on how they can help in the fight against excess weight and obesity. With strategies such as banning the advertisement of high sugar, high fat foods before 9pm, when children are most likely to be influenced. Another tactic, placing high fat, high sugar foods in less convenient places in supermarkets, such as by the entrance and checkout.

With the recent dramatic change in how we live our lives and a big focus on our mental health, there is no better time like the present to address any weight concerns you may have.

People struggling with obesity had a 55% increased risk of developing depression over time. People experiencing depression had a 58% increased risk of becoming obese (link here).

Intermittent fasting has grown in popularity in recent years. Many people, including celebrities are using it to lose weight and improve their health however, does intermittent fasting work and is it right for you? Below we explain what intermittent fasting is and some of the known benefits…….

What is intermittent fasting?

Intermittent fasting is an eating regime that cycles between a period of fasting and a period of eating. Typical methods are 16/8 – where you fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8-hour period, for example between 12pm and 8pm. Alternatively, the 5:2 method, suggests consuming only 500-600 calories on two non-consecutive days and eating normally for the other 5 days of the week.

The Eat Stop Eat method involves doing a 24 hour fast once or twice per week and eating normally for the rest of the week. So, for example, if you have dinner on Monday evening at 6pm and then do not eat anything until Tuesday evening at 6pm, you have completed a 24 hour fast. You may drink water and other zero calorie beverages during the fasting periods.

By using one of these methods, you will reduce the number of calories you eat in a day and weight loss should follow, as long as you don’t over eat during the eating period. Studies have shown the most common and successful method is the 16/8 method. Scroll down for 5 day diet plan using this method.

What are some of the benefits of intermittent fasting?

Weight loss and a reduction in belly fat

According to research, intermittent fasting can help you lose weight and belly fat.1

A review of scientific data in 2014 showed that intermittent fasting can cause weight loss of between 3-8% over 3-24 weeks. In addition, people also lost 4-7% of their waist circumference which indicates a reduction in belly fat.1 which is great news for slimmers!

Can reduce insulin resistance

Type 2 diabetes is on the increase and is diagnosed by an increased amount of glucose in the blood.

Human trials on intermittent fasting showed a reduction of fasting blood sugar by 3-6%.1

Can reduce oxidative stress & inflammation

Oxidative stress is bad news for the body this can lead to cell and tissue damage and is involved in many chronic health conditions.2

Fortunately, several studies have shown that intermittent fasting may support the body to guard against inflammation and oxidative stress.3,4

May support heart health

Research suggests that intermittent fasting may reduce ‘bad’ cholesterol, blood triglycerides, blood sugar and insulin resistance – which are all factors linked to heart disease.5

May prevent cancer

Results of animal studies show that intermittent fasting may be a tool to prevent cancer.6

A word of caution

Intermittent fasting may not be suitable for everyone. Individuals with type 2 diabetes can fast, however they should do so only under medical supervision. Individuals taking medication should discuss with their GP whether intermittent fasting is right for them, due to the need for some medication to be taken with food. Fasting is not recommended for adolescents who are still growing and women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not fast.

Additionally, fasting is not suitable for anyone with an eating disorder or who have a history of an eating disorder.

To finish

Intermittent fasting can be a great tool to aid weight loss and with the added benefits as highlighted above therefore for those who can fast it is worth a try. For those individuals who cannot fast, there are other strategies that can help. if you want more information about this chat to our specialist weight loss Dr or nutritionist for guidance.

There is no mistaking that it’s autumn outside. The cooler temperatures, the coloured falling leaves and you can’t move for pumpkins in the supermarkets. Is it me or are they getting bigger each year?

Here, we give you 5 reasons we believe autumn is the best time of year to eat well, get active and lose those stubborn, unwanted pounds.

The weather

It’s not too hot, it’s not too cold, it’s the perfect temperature to enjoy the great outdoors. Whether that’s walking, on your bike or putting on your running shoes for a jog around the park. Even the the never ending brushing away of autumn leaves will help you burn a few calories. So, get out there and enjoy the outdoors.

The food

From home cooked soups to hearty stews, autumn is the perfect time to cook some wholesome and healthy dinners. Just remember to keep it lean, low fat and pile on plenty of vegetables. Why not check out some autumn recipes online for meal inspiration and get your stock pot ready.

No pressure or urgency

You’re unlikely to see many magazines advertising diets in October and November, so you will feel less pressure to try the latest crash diet or to embark upon an unsustainable killer exercise routine.

Research tells us that the best way to lose weight is gradually. So, take a calmer and well-planned approach, set achievable goals and you will soon be slimmer and fitter.

More time to plan

With the shorter days and darker nights, we naturally spend more time indoors. Cosy evenings in gives you the perfect opportunity to plan out your meals for the week, prepare your packed lunch and to journal your progress. Treat yourself to a diet and exercise journal and start planning your new weight-loss regime.

Sleep! Zzzz zzzz zzzz

Something about autumn and winter makes me think of sleep, I think it’s the thought of animals preparing for hibernation. We don’t actually need more sleep during autumn and winter; between 7 and 9 hours is enough for most adults, but a good sleep routine is important to help you stay on track with your weight loss. When we lack sleep, we are more inclined to snack on high fat and high sugar foods to give us more energy. So, use this time to consider your sleeping habits. Switch off tv’s, laptops and mobile phones an hour before sleep, dim the lights, have a soak in the tub and keep your bedroom dark and cool to enable a long restorative night’s sleep.

So, here’s to autumn, the perfect season for weight loss success!

For weight loss advice or to talk to our nutritionist, please don’t hesitate to call us or book online for a free consultation.

Here at Bold Street Slimming and Cosmetics we are dedicated to helping you reach your weight loss goals.

We take both a medical and holistic approach to weight loss and your health is always our number one priority.

To help you on your journey with us, whether it be the very beginning or a long term plan, we have compiled some useful nutritional and weigh loss advice below.

12 Weight Loss Tips

Keep to a meal routine – try to eat at the same times each day.

Watch your portion control, take care with your portion sizes.

Eat more protein – include a protein source with each meal.

Drink plenty of water – don’t confuse hunger with thirst.

Start a diet journal – journaling can help to track your progress.

Swap refined carbs (white bread, pasta etc.) for complex carbs – wholegrain/wholemeal.

Increase fibre intake – it keeps you feeling fuller for longer.

Cut out on junk food – choose healthy snacks instead e.g. fruit, nuts, seeds, hummus and dips.

Mindful eating – slow down when eating, enjoy your food.

Get a good nights sleep – aim for 7 to 8 hours per night.

Don’t drink your calories – the average can of fizzy drink contains 150 cals. Choose your calories wisely.

Get active – exercise burns calories and aids weight loss. Walking for 30 minutes every day is a great start, if you have not done any exercise for a while.

A recent survey by King’s College London and Ipsos MORI of over 2000 people asked the question above and the results showed 48% of respondents reported gaining weight during lockdown. Also, 29% say they have drunk more alcohol than they usual do.

With the added stress and uncertainly that a global pandemic brings and most of us spending more time at home than usual, it comes as no surprise that many of us have put on a few pounds. While we need to show ourselves some compassion during these stressful times, if you find that your weight is still creeping up, here are a few Bold Street Slimming top tips for getting back on track.

Stick to Consistent Meal Times

Have three meals each day; breakfast, lunch and dinner and no snacks. Just because we are closer to our kitchens, doesn’t mean we should pop in there every couple of hours and reach for high calorie food. Make a meal plan, know what you are going to eat and when and stick to it. A bit of normality can really help us feel in control and get back on track with our weight loss goals.

Get Active

A closed gym or local swimming pool is not an excuse to skip the exercise routine. There are many things you can do at and around home to keep active. In fact, during the first few months of lockdown, home fitness equipment sales sky-rocketed, with consumers buying kettlebells, stationary bikes and treadmills. However, you don’t need fancy equipment to get fit. If you have not done any physical activity for a while, start with a 30 minute walk 3 times per week and build up from there. Or if you are already working out and want to up the pace, choose a High Intensity (HIT) workout, which is a great fat burner. You Tube is a good place to find beginner HIT workouts.

What can you add to your diet?

Instead of focusing on removing food items from your diet, consider what you can add to it. Protein is a great choice, it fills you up and reduces the hunger hormone, ghrelin. Good sources of protein include chicken, turkey, eggs, beans, legumes and fish. Aim to eat a protein source with each meal.

Fibre

Ensure you are eating enough fibre, aim for around 25g per day for women and 30g for men. It fills you up and keeps your digestive system healthy. Choose from porridge oats, wholemeal/wholegrain bread, wholewheat pasta, vegetables such as broccoli, sweetcorn and carrots and also fruit, for example, berries, apples, pears and oranges.

And remember, consistency is key!

Slimming injections such as The Skinny pen ® and The Skinny Jab ® have taken the media by storm in recent years. With a number of celebs boasting about their results, this prescription only medicine is proven to reduce BMI, aid in shifting those extra pounds, has helped many on their weight loss journey and is a recognised treatment for Type 2 diabetes.

We are 5 years on since the release of the skinny pen ® and with other jabs, needles and pens claiming to do the job, below are some key facts about how they work and what you can expect.

Sexenda ®

Saxenda is a prescription only medication, its main use is to help supress your appetite by regulating the hormone you produce called glucagon-like-peptide (GLP-1), this reaction causes you to not feel hungry and so consuming fewer calories aids in weight loss.

3 out of 5 people taking Saxenda ® achieved significant weight loss of 5% or more with an average weight loss of 12 pounds.

How to use saxenda?

Saxenda comes in a pen like form with a retractable small needle, this is injected into one of the following areas every day… stomach area, upper thigh or upper arm area. Each pen generally lasts between 2 to 4 weeks.

Ozempic ®

Used as a successful prescription only treatment for type 2 diabetes, Ozempic works similarly to Saxenda ® by supressing the appetite in order for you to consume less calories.

In a 1 year medical study conducted on people weighing an average of 197 pounds taking a 1mg dose of Ozempic ® per week resulted of an average lost 12 pounds*.

How to use Ozempic ®

Ozempic again comes in a pen like injectable form, injected weekly into areas such as stomach area, upper thigh or upper arm area. Each pen lasts 4 weeks.
