Autumn – a great time to restart your weight loss regime
There is no mistaking that it’s autumn outside. The cooler temperatures, the coloured falling leaves and you can’t move for pumpkins in the supermarkets. Is it me or are they getting bigger each year?
Here, we give you 5 reasons we believe autumn is the best time of year to eat well, get active and lose those stubborn, unwanted pounds.
The weather
It’s not too hot, it’s not too cold, it’s the perfect temperature to enjoy the great outdoors. Whether that’s walking, on your bike or putting on your running shoes for a jog around the park. Even the the never ending brushing away of autumn leaves will help you burn a few calories. So, get out there and enjoy the outdoors.
The food
From home cooked soups to hearty stews, autumn is the perfect time to cook some wholesome and healthy dinners. Just remember to keep it lean, low fat and pile on plenty of vegetables. Why not check out some autumn recipes online for meal inspiration and get your stock pot ready.
No pressure or urgency
You’re unlikely to see many magazines advertising diets in October and November, so you will feel less pressure to try the latest crash diet or to embark upon an unsustainable killer exercise routine.
Research tells us that the best way to lose weight is gradually. So, take a calmer and well-planned approach, set achievable goals and you will soon be slimmer and fitter.
More time to plan
With the shorter days and darker nights, we naturally spend more time indoors. Cosy evenings in gives you the perfect opportunity to plan out your meals for the week, prepare your packed lunch and to journal your progress. Treat yourself to a diet and exercise journal and start planning your new weight-loss regime.
Sleep! Zzzz zzzz zzzz
Something about autumn and winter makes me think of sleep, I think it’s the thought of animals preparing for hibernation. We don’t actually need more sleep during autumn and winter; between 7 and 9 hours is enough for most adults, but a good sleep routine is important to help you stay on track with your weight loss. When we lack sleep, we are more inclined to snack on high fat and high sugar foods to give us more energy. So, use this time to consider your sleeping habits. Switch off tv’s, laptops and mobile phones an hour before sleep, dim the lights, have a soak in the tub and keep your bedroom dark and cool to enable a long restorative night’s sleep.
So, here’s to autumn, the perfect season for weight loss success!
