Temple fillers can be used for a number of reasons. Adding volume to the temple area to create a softer silhouette to the face, and to soften fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, resulting  in an enhanced, lifted, youthful appearance. Another common concern for temple fillers is to fill any hollowing of the temple area.

We spoke with our Aesthetic Doctor and cosmetic surgeon, Dr Paul Effiong and this was his view on temple fillers…

‘Temple fillers can be a great way of softening the overall look of the face. They can add volume to the upper facial area, giving a great youthful look as the appearance of the whole face is lifted. As both women and men age, they lose volume in the face due to a lack of collagen, this can give the face a hollowing appearance which can be aging. By adding a cushion to the temple area, you can bring that volume back and give the face a more contoured and lifted look’.

Temple fillers are considered to be a relatively safe procedure; however, with any medical aesthetic treatment there are risks. It is always recommended to choose a medical aesthetic professional with plenty of experience.

Whilst it may not be one of the most common areas of filler requested, according to the Victorian cosmetics institute, it is the hidden secret to enhancing your face. with the current trends we seem to be seeing in the clinic and most recently in Vogue, could 2021 be the year of the temple filler?

Surprisingly, out of the 10 people we asked, 9 of them thought the same filler was used for all areas of the face and 4 of them knew names of different brands (always nice to see consumers doing their research)!

So, what types of fillers are there?

The most common fillers used on the market today are Hyaluronic Acid (HA) fillers, these are a more natural and ‘lighter’ type of filler, they can typically last between 6 months – 18 months and degrade by the body over time by free radicals. Hyaluronic acid fillers are also reversible, so, in cases where a client doesn’t like the end result or, in rare cases that the filler needs to be removed this can be achieved by using an enzyme called Hyaluronidase. Hyaluronidase breaks down the bonds of the filler resulting in the filler becoming more liquid and loosening its form.

Are all hyaluronic acid fillers the same?

There is a multitude of different brands of hyaluronic acid fillers, each having its own chemical compound to which each individual injector or prescriber prefers to use. Furthermore, hyaluronic acid fillers all have a different G Prime.

What is a G Prime?

The G Prime of a filler is in simple terms its density. The higher the G Prime, the firmer the filler and the less fluidity it will have. The lower the G Prime in the filler, the thinner and greater spread ability it will have.

So, the question is, what filler for what areas?

Generally speaking, the denser fillers (the ones with a higher G Prime) will be used in areas such as the jaw, chin, nose and temple areas. The less dense fillers (ones with a lower G Prime) will be used in areas such as the lips and tear trough as these areas are made up of thinner more delicate skin.

So, what is hyaluronic acid (HA)?

Hyaluronic acid is natural substance produced by the body, it forms the building blocks of the skin, helping to keep skin and lips supple and hydrated with its ability to attract and hold water molecules. It can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water!

Our bodies natural production of hyaluronic acid slows down with age, typically after the ages of 25. After this time we can start to see signs of ageing such as fine lines, wrinkles, loss of firmness and volume to facial contours.

What are hyaluronic acid fillers

Natural Hyaluronic acid has been created in an injectable form, easily broken down by the body over time as not to be too harsh or permanent. It helps to create volume, smooths out wrinkles and adds structure to the skin.

What areas can HA fillers be used in?

Hyaluronic acid fillers can be used in areas such as the nose, to change the shape and create a different facial silhouette. The lip area creating volume and a more defined lip line. They are being used to create a stronger and more defined jawline. They can also create higher and more defined cheekbones, lifting the face. Commonly used around the nasolabial folds (smile lines) to soften the area and fill in any deeper lines and the tear trough area (lines under the eyes) to create a less tired, fresher and rested eye area.

How long do hyaluronic acid fillers last?

Hyaluronic acid fillers aren’t permanent, they typically last anything from 4 to 9 months depending on the individual.
